The “Hell of the South”: a UCI marathon held since 2007 and regarded as South Africa’s toughest one-day mountain bike race. From Chandelier Game Lodge near Oudtshoorn it crosses the Little Karoo and the historic Attakwaskloof pass in the Outeniqua Mountains to the coast at Great Brak River. Pros (UCI Elite) and nearly 1,000 amateurs ride the same course; in 2027 it offers the highest prize money of any one-day marathon on the UCI calendar.
