Self-supported bikepacking ride of around 1,000 km and more than 20,000 m of climbing from Canberra through the Australian Alps to Melbourne, created by Dan Hunt in 2016. The route through Namadgi, Kosciuszko and Alpine National Parks changes every year and takes in high plains, historic alpine huts, river crossings and hike-a-bike sections. It is not a race: riders choose their own departure day and aim for the shared “Grand Finish” in Melbourne (5 December in 2026); satellite trackers are mandatory.

About the event
The Hunt 1000 grew out of the idea of riding the Australian Alps Walking Track by bike: in 2016 Dan Hunt planned a route of backcountry trails, fire roads and country lanes through to Melbourne. At the first edition 28 riders set off from Canberra, and fewer than half made it. According to the organiser, around half of the starters still finish today; riders come from Australia, New Zealand, North America and Europe.
The Hunt 1000 is not a race: there are no support vehicles, no course marshals and no prizes. Everyone rides without outside help, carries their own gear, navigates themselves and takes full responsibility for their own safety. Around 70% of the route is unpaved, resupply points are few, and riders should expect 7 to more than 14 days. A satellite tracker (SPOT or Garmin inReach) with an active subscription is mandatory, and live tracking runs via MAProgress. It can snow in the high country even in summer, and rivers may be impassable after heavy rain.
The entry fee includes GPS files with campsites and resupply notes (released in early November in 2026), a Ride with GPS Pro account, an online rider briefing and a celebration on the evening of the finish day in Melbourne (2026). In 2026, under the Humanitix rules, riders who could not start could resell their place or apply to defer to the next edition (subject to availability).
