Large mountain bike marathon in Rotorua’s Whakarewarewa Forest which, according to the organiser, draws more than 3,000 riders, making it one of the biggest MTB events in the Southern Hemisphere. The 100 km loop links the forest’s singletrack without repeating a trail, while the “Giant Miler” covers 172 km with a 4:30 am start; there are also 50, 25 and 10 km rides and a kids’ race. In 2026 the elite 100 km race doubles as the New Zealand marathon championships.

About the event

The Whaka 100 takes place every year over New Zealand's Labour Weekend in Rotorua and celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2026. Since the end of 2013 it has been organised by Belinda and Tim Farmer with their company Nduro Events, which also runs the Volcanic Epic. All courses are marked, so no navigation is needed. A moderate level of technical skill is required: the trails are mostly grade 1–4 with short grade 5 sections, and all features are rollable. E-bikes are not permitted on the 100 km and the Miler; the minimum age for the 100 km is 16.

The 100 km starts in waves based on estimated finish time. There is a feed zone with drop bags at 50 km and two water stations; the time limit is 11 hours, with intermediate cut-offs. The Miler starts before dawn and must be completed by 7:30 pm; mandatory gear includes front and rear lights, a survival bag, a phone and a multi-tool with chain breaker. Personal support crews may only help at the official stations. In sustained heavy rain the course may be diverted.

Rotorua is about three hours' drive from Auckland; Air New Zealand flies direct from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. In 2026 self-contained campervans could book a site at a camp opposite the event venue at Waipa. The organiser did not offer bike transport in 2026.
